1st Week of Teaching

I finally started teaching two days ago, and it's going very well so far.  The first day, however, was a bit of a shock.  I came into class having expectations about certain student behavior based on the angel students I had in my practice-teaching sessions.  I was very surprised to see that the students in this branch of AUA are A LOT louder.  They speak Thai all the time, and because most of them know each other from previous classes, they're more comfortable chatting with each other and just being disruptive in general.  The student population is also very different because most people in this school are younger, either in high school or college, which makes them a lot more silly and playful.

On my first day, because I wasn't expecting this at all, I did not have the best time teaching.  I found that I was having trouble controlling the two classes I had, and my lesson plan wasn't going exactly as planned.

After a night of reflecting and plenty of ranting to Fortune Cookie, I came back to school the next day with a different and a more refreshed perspective.  I began to think that this is a very good thing because I realized that I actually don't want to be spoiled at my job.  I want to be able to conquer difficult classes so that I can be a more developed teacher, especially if I plan to teach in America where students are a lot more challenging.  My Thai students may be disruptive, but they're very nice kids.  Outside of class, they're all smiles, and they're just very friendly in general.  This has helped me look beyond their behavior in class.  Now I've come to accept it, and I will continue to do my best to figure out how to handle it as best I can.

I love teaching so far!  :)
